Puppy Sanctuary

Here at Lake Atitlan, as in many third-world countries access to Veterinary Care is limited. We have created a solution to this by opening a puppy sanctuary. We take in pregnant female dogs and nursing mothers. We provide them with a safe space where they can raise their puppies without fear. We provide unlimited food so that the mother produces nutritious milk and the babies grow up healthy without food scarcity issues.

Once the mothers are done nursing they are vaccinated, sterilized, and returned to the location they were picked up. They will have a much better life without the burden of pregnancy and providing multiple litters of milk every year. Getting sterilized saves them from the violence that happens when they go into heat and are pursued by many male dogs.

The puppies are raised in a safe container, socialized with the help of our volunteers. Once they are fully vaccinated and sterilized they are offered up for adoption in all of the villages here at Lake Atitlan.
